Ching expected to miss three weeks with knee injury (AP)


Houston Dynamo leading scorer Brian Ching will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery on his right knee and is expected to be sidelined for three weeks. Ching, injured in last week's All-Star game against English Premier League champion Chelsea FC, hopes to have a quicker recovery than is anticipated. Crew 3, Revolution 0 (AP)


Jason Garey, Eddie Gaven and Ezra Hendrickson scored to help the Columbus Crew beat the New England Revolution 3-0 Saturday night. Columbus recorded its fastest score of the season when Garey pounced on a rebound spilled by New England goalkeeper Matt Reis in the third minute. Gaven doubled the Crew's lead with a carefully placed strike from nine yards in front of goal in the 39th minute.

Euro 2008 Qualifying Roundup, Sep. 6


France gained some payback for its World Cup final loss with a 3-1 victory over Italy in European Championship qualifying Wednesday while Germany routed San Marino by a championship record 13-0.
Northern Ireland came from behind to beat Spain 3-2 in the day's biggest upset with David Healy scoring all three. But England and the Netherlands moved smoothly toward Euro 2008 with their second shutout victories in group play.

France beats Georgia 3-0 in qualifier


Florent Malouda and Louis Saha each scored Saturday to lead France over Georgia 3-0 in a European Championship qualifying match.
Franck Ribery assisted on both early goals as France dominated its opening Group B match.
Georgia defender Malkhaz Asatiani scored an own-goal in the 46th, volleying Willy Sagnol's pass over the head of goalkeeper Grigol Chanturia.
France, which lost the World Cup final to Italy in a penalty shootout, could have scored more.


World champion Italy held to 1-1 draw


Italy was held to a 1-1 draw by 65th-ranked Lithuania in its first competitive match as world champion on Saturday.
The World Cup trophy was paraded around the field at San Paolo stadium before kickoff but the celebrations quickly turned silent when Lithuania captain Tomas Danilevicius scored in the 21st minute.
The 1.90-meter (6-foot-4) Danilevicius, who plays for Livorno in Italy's Serie A, took advantage of poor defense by Italy and shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Freddy Adu scored on a free kick, but Chris Klein responded with a second-half goal to lift Real Salt Lake to a 1-1 tie with D.C. United Saturday night. League-leading scorer Jeff Cunningham added his 10th assist on Klein's goal, making him the ninth player in league history to contribute 15 goals and 10 assists in a season.
